CLASSES

For Winter 2020 we are thrilled to offer classes five days a week. All of these classes will take place in our new space at 2404 Mass Ave, Cambridge with plenty of FREE PARKING in our parking lot!

Muckykids Art Studio offers a variety of classes for kids aged 18 mo. through 13 years. Class series consist of ten weekly sessions. Sessions run anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, as noted in the class descriptions. The class series listed are our offerings for the Winter 2020 semester, which starts January 6, 2020.

All classes are taught by Liz Vance, except: Friday classes are taught by Megan Langelier, and Comics and Illustration is taught by Joanna Abballe.

Sensory Fun (Ages 18-36 mo.) – 45 min. x 10 weeks
Come paint with fingers, trucks and brushes! Explore slime, color mixing, glue, clay, magnetism, sound and more! Each week there is a varied selection of sensory-rich, art-themed projects. Sensory Fun is a wonderful opportunity to participate in your young child’s artistic exploration and discovery. This is a process-based class, with a focus on open-ended activities. Please come prepared to get messy! Enrollment limited to 8 per section.

Art Explorations (Ages 3+4) – 1 hr x 10 weeks
In this class for preschoolers we will explore basic art concepts and skills! There will be projects that allow for experimentation with line quality, color theory, and shape. We will compare 2D vs 3D and symmetry vs asymmetry. Some of the projects will include printmaking, mixed media, wax resist, mosaics, color mixing, sculpture, and simple stitching. This is a process-based class, allowing for individual expression, experimentation, and emergent curriculum.

Art and Science (Ages 3-4) – 1 hr x 10 weeks
In this class we will have a blast thinking and acting like the creative scientists that we already are!! As a group we will predict outcomes, explore the process of experimentation, and examine results. Some of the many activities will include: pendulum painting, magnifying their own drawings, catching and bending light, making colorful potions, and building simple circuits. Enrollment limited to 6 per section.

Art and Science (Ages 5-7) – 1 hr 15 min x 10 weeks
In this class we will have a blast thinking and acting like the creative scientists that we already are! We will wonder why the physical world behaves as it does. In doing so, explorations and experiments with gravity, force and motion, friction, optics, electricity, density, and states of matter will be a part of this class. Some of the many activities will include: playing with substances that absorb, dissolve, melt, and/or evaporate, sculpting with gravity as a pulling force, pendulum painting, catching and bending light, and building simple circuits. Enrollment limited to 8 per section.

Printmaking (Ages 5-7) – 1 hr 15 min x 10 weeks
In this class we will explore some of the many forms of printmaking. We will carve printing plates, build printing plates, print with found objects, print with nature, and make our own stamps. This is a class where experimentation and unexpected results are celebrated! Some of the printed pieces will be turned into hanging sculpture. Some of the prints will be framed. And not all of the prints will be on paper! Enrollment limited to 8.

Printmaking: Shape, Pattern and Print (Ages 8-10) – 1 hr 30 min x 10 weeks
This will be a dynamic semester full of geometric and organic shapes, how shapes can combine to make patterns, and learning about various printmaking styles. We will take inspiration from our favorite shapes, textile design, patterns in nature, and established printmakers. Screen printing, gelatin, collagraph, and carved rubber block will be some of the techniques we will explore. And we won’t limit ourselves to printing on just paper!

Comics and Illustration (Ages 11-13) – 2 hrs x 10 weeks
This introductory class will explore the materials, concepts, and processes involved in the making of a short comic. The goal of the class is to work on story writing, character creation, and illustration skills. Students will learn how to take these three core skills to bring to life their very own comic book. Along the way, we may dabble in crafting character figures in 3D and printing comic imagery on t-shirts. Enrollment limited to 6.
