Dearest Muckykids Community,
I am writing to let you know that, after 15 lovely and colorful years, I have decided to close my business as of this coming June. It has been a tough decision to make and much thought has gone into it, but I have finally settled on the fact that my time as a business owner has come to an end. I am so sorry if this is sad news to receive – if I could, I would take all the kids with me to continue creating with them.
At its height, Muckykids was open 7 days a week, offering drop-in studio hours, classes for ages 18 months to 12 years, birthday parties, a summer program, adult art nights, pop-up music concerts, and some holiday events for friend groups. At that time, 6 wonderful employees shared these responsibilities with me. It was a force!
Toward the end of the pandemic, I faced the choice of rebuilding the business as it was, or honoring a call I had been feeling to move onto a new chapter in my working with kids. I’d been putting off closing for quite some time – not wanting to let go. But Muckykids’ building has been sold, and the new developers plan to tear it down to build condos. They will honor my current lease, which ends this June. Not wanting to move the business again, as I did in 2019, I took this as a sign to act on that calling I felt. Sadly this means giving up the creative space that is Muckykids.
It’s been an amazing 15 years and I am so incredibly grateful for all the families, employees, and interns who have trusted me and helped me along the way. Building a vision takes many hands and hearts. We can all feel proud of this safe and engaging space for kids, where open-ended creativity serves as a vehicle for growth, learning, and joy.
If you have any thoughts or questions about this change, please send me an email.
With so much love,
Liz
p.s. Stay tuned regarding a date this spring for a farewell get together.
